Fall Events: Great Resources for Period Enthusiasts

Several Fall events provide great opportunities for owners of vintage homes, or for anyone who likes period details, to explore resources.

BAHA’s Fall Lecture Series: Living with Arts & Crafts. A three-part series will be held at the Hillside Club, 2286 Cedar Street, Berkeley.

Thursday,  September 26, at 7:30 pm: The Tiles of California Faience, Berkeley, Cal., 1913–1959

calfai6Tile scholar Dr. Kirby William Brown will present a retrospective showing the entire range of beautiful pottery and tiles made by the California Faience Company during the peak of their production of  hand-crafted tiles and pottery for the high-end market. This small company was established by William Bragdon and Chauncey Thomas, both well-educated and talented ceramic artists, who both taught at the California School of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA. In this illustrated lecture, Dr. Brown, who is the grandson of California Faience founder William Bragdon, will present a retrospective showing the entire range of beautiful pottery and tiles made by the company,

Additional lectures will occur on October 24th, when Tim Hansen will speak on early Arts & Crafts furniture design, and on November 14th, when Ten Ellison will speak on Progressive Leaded Glass in Turn-of-the-Century America.

Sunday, Sept. 29th from 10 – 6 at Fort Mason. For those who appreciate an earlier aesthetic you won’t want to miss the First Annual Victorian Homes Tradeshow.  The event promises to bring together home owners, antiques enthusiasts and affiliated artisans and craftspeople. The event will include a tradeshow and presentations by historians, artisans and lenders.


Arts & Crafts Auction

Friday, October 11th, 1 pm: A Major Arts & Crafts Auction at Michaan’s Auction Gallery in Alameda.Lee Jester, proprietor of the Craftsman Home, has curated a collection of over 300 items of for sale:  furniture, accessories, paintings, lighting and lots of pottery–including some pieces from California Faience. Previews begin Friday, October 4th at noon, and continue through an extended weekend. A fully illustrated catalogue is available on line.
